Rubber if it's family/friends. Patter if I'm meeting someone new (i hug new people what can i say, hand shaking is too formal and uptight)

I am a back patter, because a back rub is more intimate and says I know you well enough to rub your back. It also says "I know what you're going through, and I'm here for you."
Rubbing someones back can make them feel like you feel sorry for them. And Personally I don't like people rubbing, patting, or even touching me in any way.

depends on the situation, usually neither I just hug
at like a funeral or sad occasion maybe a little rub in the hug
