I started at the beginning, and quit about 3 years ago. Wondering what has become of the game?

Many people still play it. In fact the official servers are still too crowded for me and full of idiots. Luckily, as usually happens with a mmorpg, there are now hundreds of servers being run by players (over 300 last I looked).

They are free to play. But thats not why I like them. They have fragmented the desires of the players. There are servers which allow no player-kill-player, and ones that are totally about pkill and player hunts. There are some that are easy and you get lots of free gifts all the time, and ones where gains are hard and it takes months to get a decent leveled character. There are ones that are locked at some previous version of UO cause they think later versions ruined it, and ones that are modified to the point that you cant even recognize the maps or game altho it plays the same.

The one I found is free to play, run by adults (a husband and wife team), no pkill (tho there is an arena for challenges), hard gains, lots of added kewl features, and enough people to get hunting parties together but still leave true wilderness I can build my house in.

Side Comment: World of Wonder is also starting to pop up free player servers, and Everquest is supposed to have a few also.

I am not sure if anyone plays Ultima. I would tend to think no since World of Warcraft, Everquest and Guild wars came out.
