In my 10g nano saltwater tank im gunna be making a custom backround made out of foam and then im gunna cover it with sand so that it almost looks like a real rock and it will give a place for bacteria to grow. does anybody know if this stuff will act as live rock?

from all my research you can usegreat stuff foam in saltwater tanks with no ill-effects and 2 part resins also in saltwater tanks with no problems.... both become inert when dried. price is very low and it looks very good.

I don't know if it will act like a live rock, probably not. However, the materials you use could be poisonous to your fish. The foam you use could contain dangerous chemicals,,and if you are 'attaching' sand, I assume you would use some sort of glue? Super dangerous to the fish. Even glue that is non toxic to children etc, can dissipate in the water and be toxic to fish. Take care with what you put in there.

At 10 gallons, how much more could live rock cost. The kind of foam you would need and the special adhesives would probably cost more than the real thing. And the wild stuff will work better.

I dont think it will, but it depends on what you have already in your tank, what kind of life do you have? I will check with the hubby when he gets home cause he takes care of our 150g saltwater tank. Good Luck, I will get back to you tonight!

Sure. I have seen reef restoration where they use cement to build a "pie" tower. Corals and other inverts settle in the newly custom made base.
