My and DH are TTC again...we have had two miscarriages this year...

BUT...I have found out that I have an absessed tooth, and it needs to be fixed, but the infection is so bad that they are going to have to do surgery and remove a cyst the size of a marble from my face.....it doesn't hurt or bother me, but it is growing into my sinus cavity.....

I am wondering if this could have caused my miscarriages from early this year.

Also....what would happen if I got pregnant before they did my surgery? If I was preggers, would they even do the surgery....I am so confused now....I don't know what to do...ew want to get pregnant before my husband deploys...but now I am scared we will end up loosing another child...

Any advice is greatly welcomed.....TIA

AS I see it there are two questions here.

To the question of oral surgery effecting the baby:
The only part of Oral surgery that effects pregnancy is possibly the xrays. They will ask you if you are or could possibly be pregnant because the radiation from the x-rays could be harmful to the baby.

Depending on the kind of Anesthesia they use, that also could be harmful to the baby. Ask for Lidacane or Novacane those are the two that do not effect pregnancies too often. Nitrous Oxide (aka Laughing gas) can effect the baby it can also make you pretty nauseous as does A general amesthetic.

To the question of the cyst causing the miscarriages. I tend to think it did not. There is no known systemic cause of miscarriages, they just seem to happen. Increase your folic acid. It is my understanding from sources that increasing your intake of folic acid promotes prenancy health and can help as a guard against miscarriage.

By the way, from a study done by the Mayo clinic, most women have between 1 - 2 miscarriages a year, but they happen before the women even knows conception occured. So you only had 2 miscarriages that you were aware of.

If you're so newly pregnant that it doesnt trigger a test you should be okay, just let them know you dont want any new xrays done. Baby is living off a yoke sac for the first 8 weeks, so it wont share your blood and what may be in it yet.

If your body was stressed with the fight of the absess yes, it may have caused the losses, your body will not invest time and energy, and risk your well being on a pregnancy unless it knows all is well and it can see it through to the end, before that point it will abort the pregnancies.

In my opinion you probably need to have your absess taken care of first because if infection is present it could cause complications with your pregnancy. If you became pregnant before surgery I think they could still do the surgery, but if it were me, I would speak to my obgyn about the risks of anesthesia for the baby. Either way, the infection you have in your mouth can become very serious and make you very sick if you don't take care of it now! You need to be healthy and strong to carry your baby. If you can't get pregnant now, then maybe it will have to wait until he can come home again. I know you feel the need to "rush", but your health must come first in this situation.

um...your infection could have possibly caused your miscarriages. depending on when your husband deploys, why dont you get the surgery first...then get pregnant. But if that wont' work, usually docs tell you that if you have to have anything dental done to do it in the first trimester. I know some women who have actually had thier gall bladder taken out while they were pregnant. I would talk it over with your doc and see what he says. Just explain to him that you and your husband really want to try to get pregnant before he deploys but you are worried. He can asses the risks and let you know if its ok or not. Good Luck

That could have cased the M/C's, Your body could'nt fight that and hold a pregnancy at the same time.
You should try to avoild getting prego untill your problem is fixed. If you are prego find out if there is any way they could help you without harming the baby.
I really feel like this is why you have had the m/c's. Get the problem fixed before anything.

Good luck!!!

No, the abcess would NOT cause miscarriages.

When you do the surgery, if you are or thiere is ANY chance that you could be pregnant, TELL THEM. I know for things like novacaine, there is a special kind they can give to pregnant women. I would imagine it's the same for local anethetic? But check. Talk to your OB AND your dentist.

Best,
