If your talking about being "cool" then the worst that happens is you find out who your real friends are and possibly aren't as accepted, but it also shows your not afraid to do your own thing and not just what society thinks you should be doing. You only live once, enjoy it for yourself, not others.

There are two circumstances that I can think of off the top of my head. The first one is where the crowd is doing something because most people got hurt when they try something so the crowd avoids it. This is the cannonical reason, the one most often quoted, and the one least often a good reason for not doing something.

The most significant reason people can get hurt when not following the crowd is when they suddenly realize they need help with something, but there is nobody around to help them. If you take the path less traveled and fall into a well, you're in some serious trouble.

If you go your own way spiritually, people can be very resentful. Opportunities will be lost, doors will be closed. It's currently almost impossible for someone who claims to be an atheist to get into public office, for instance.

Well, obviously if there is a fire or some other disaster happening it would be harmful. I expect there are a lot of people in prison that decided to do things their way instead of following the rules of society. If the crowd is doing what is right then it is a good idea to follow. Of course if there is no leader they could follow right off a cliff. Following God's laws of love has priority over following the crowd. Mmm

Depends on the circumstance, if a building is on fire then you follow the crowd. If the crowd is doing something that you know is wrong then you would have to make the choice.

only a few years ago... everyone was yelling!
"buy realestate!"
and now... everyone is hurting... and trying to liquidate their assets.... their second mortgages... debts and their homes!

why?
because... a black sheep out there.... knew to start something (the banks and wealthy investors)
They knew to have people convinced that home ownership is the best thing you could do for you and your family... and that the price can only go up! in the long run!

but... ummm.... only if you have a paid off home will you benefit.... in the long run.... If you have debt... you have to worry about the short run... and that is... having a job to pay off that debt/mtg!

and that.... if you didn't follow the crowd... i think you are far FAR ahead of everyone else right now.

in short.... investment strategies... you must bet on the least expected horse?

just my thoughts

On the highway. You had better be following the crowd on there, or you might end up as a grease spot.
