In 1972, the civilized countries of the world banned nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons serve no useful purpose other than for Third World leaders to show their muscle.
Militarily, they make no sense. They can harm an enemy but the radiation eventually poisons everyone. No sane person would want to see nuclear war, There are only losers.
The U.S. has reduced nuclear weapons by over 50%. The other nuclear powers are believe to be reducing weapons also. Inspection problems have slowed down the process but it continues.
The biggest obstace to total elimination of nuclear weapons is blackmail. No country would disarm if they thought their rivals would threaten them with these weapons.
South Africa and Brazil are believed to have totally disarmed. Israel and India started early and have not added to their capability. Pakistan probably wishes it did not have the burden.
