Obviously there is the good vs. evil theme but are there any other major themes, or even some underlying ones that come up every now and then? And what kind of symbols have you found in the books as well?

the one theme that stood out for me was friendship..throughout seven years the trio stayed as friends and stayed together even till the end...

and it could also be seen as a small theme of courage and destiny - everybody in the series had some courage and it was harrys destiny which he followed thru..he knew that he need to kill his enemy and throughout his journey he showed immense courage..

finally there was alott about family - harry witnessed that even without money, the weasly family had much love and overcame pretty much everything that was thrown at them. that shows amazing determination

Friendship. Even though they all have their fights, the three friends (Harry, Ron and Hermione) stay friends. This, to me, is the best part of the series.

Family. Contrasting Ron's family with Harry's family shows how a family may have problems but can overcome them. It shows how a family can be outrageously mean to one and outrageously open to even a nonmember.
