its a Triangle cut in half I think?



~AC = 16, ~BC = 24 and ~AB =20

~CD bisects point A and point B

Point D is between Point A and Point B

solve for ~AD and ~DB

Hint: AD = x
DB = 20 -x

(i hate math)

If CD bisects AB, then the intersection is exactly half way between A and B. If D is between A and B, then it must be half way between since it is on CD. AD = DB = AB/2 = 10

ok you have a triangle with verticies A,B,C right and the length from A to B is 20 you do not need to worry about the other lengths

now you have pt D between A and B
and point D is connected to C and is a bisector of A and B this means that D is exaclty in the middle of A and B

so now think of it as a line
20-x x
A_____________D_____________B

if the area from A to B is 20 then you can let the area from D to B equal x then the length from A to D has to be twenty minus x

but there is an easier way to think about it..... if AB is 20 and D is in the middle then their has to be length of 10 between D and A, and D and B

so AD=10 and DB=10

If point D is in between points A and B and CD bisects points A and B. it means point D is the mid point of AB.
Therefore AD= 10, BD=10

If CD bisects AB. The word bisect means to cut in half.
If AB is cut in half, then AD and DB are equal
AB = DB
x = 20 - x
2x = 20
x = 10

There's something unclear about "~CD bisects point A and point B". Why refer to POINT A and POINT B, instead of ~AB?

Can bisect mean "two pieces, not necessarily equal"? Because otherwise the problem is too simple.

I think that Reynwater is correct and that ~CD ⊥ ~AB. It makes the problem more challenging but still solvable.

Draw triangle ABC -- doesn't have to be to scale

Lable sides according to given

Bisecting line from point C to AB (see definition of bisect, doesn't it form a 90 degree angle?)

Then you can fly with it.
