My 12 month old has been vomiting a lot lately and I can't figure out the cause. I took him for his 1 year appt and the doctor did not seem worried. Whenever I try to put him down for naps (for about 2 weeks now), even when he's asleep, he will wake up, start crying hysterically, and vomit. Is he crying because he's in pain and this leads to the vomiting, or is he making himself vomit? I am so frustrated and sad and I don't know what to do. I had hoped the doctor would have some answers, but again, he didn't seem worried at all. He said to try gas drops and antacid. I did and neither seem to work. Is this a phase he'll grow out of? Should I ignore him when he does this? I have never been good at the crying it out method and this is just torture. But he won't nap!!! And sometimes he won't go down at nighttime without crying and vomiting, too. This is happening at least once a day. Help!!!

Your doctor sounds like a moron... sorry. I was trying to come up iwht a nicer word. I have worked in a hospital and have never heard of anyone vomiting from stomach acid. little babies can vomit from gas if a burp does not come up.. but that is not regularly. I am sorry I don't have an answer. I would do the elimation tecnique. First I would lay down with him for his nap. If he does not vomit and all other coniditions are the same (same body position and same bed, same atmoshpere, than I would look at behavior). Other things to eliminate would be to try elevating his head and that will tell you if it is his position, maybe when he gets in a certain position he does have some sort of stomach acid (but i still think that is unlikely). Just change his nap routine, one thing at a time to eliminate possilibites until you get your answer.

No hes not vomiting for attention! Ask someone else, go find another doctor! Wrap him up like a burrito in his his blanket and rock him and soothe him until hes more calm. learn how to pre-empt his crying. Write down what happens during the day and see if there are any common triggers during the day. And find a different doctor

My sisters son has a simialr way of vomiting. When he gets in trouble (he is 4 now) he cries hysterically until he vomits. They get hot and flustered causing them to vomit. My personal opnion, at the age your child is now, he's not really aware of what he's doing. Now my nephew, he knows!

What's probably happening is that he's upset that you are putting him down for a nap, so he cries. The longer you go without tending to him, the more he cries and the harder he cries. Eventually he is just so worked up the he can't help but vomit. I've never liked the cry it out method, I tried it with my son and it gave the me the same problem. Check out Tracy Hogg's book Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, or her website www.babywhisperer.com It was a life saver for me. It doesn't support crying it out, but it also doesn't mean you have to do everything baby's way. Most of the time nap/sleep problems are caused by the naps/sleeps themselves. For instance, if baby naps too long or too little in the day, it could totally through off his sleep. Same for nights, if he sleeps to short or long at night, his naps will be off. If you try to put him down early for a nap or too late, it will be harder to get him down. This baby whisperer stuff worked awesome for me. I've been in your shoes. It helped me to recognize by his cues when was the right time to get him to nap. If I catch him at the right time and start his wind down routine of rocking and lullaby music, he'll fall asleep in 5-10 minutes, and sleep for about 2 hours. Check it out.

I can't imagine that a child would purposely vomit for attention. He might be getting himself worked up so much that it happens, but I seriously doubt it is on purpose.

Has he any new teeth coming in? And did the dr. check his ears. The fact that laying him down gets him going says to me that there is some painful pressure. Which could be teeth or ears. Try elavating him a little with a pillow or something under the matress pad.

Some kids DO cry so hard that they make themselves sick. You need to figure out if it's pain or if the kid is just feeling abandoned.
I would check into food allergies. Is he drinking milk? Could be lactose intolerant.
