You have to change it, usually you indicate if you plan to take your husband's name when you apply for your marriage license. You need to change your name with the DMV, Social Security and with all of your creditors. You will need to take a copy of your marriage license with you.

I got married a year ago and did not take my husbands last name on the marriage certificate. I called the city clerks office to check about using his last name on official documents and I was told I WOULD HAVE TO GET MARRIED AGAIN!!!! They say I did not use my husbands last name on the license so although we are legally married I cannot use his last name! I m sick to my stomach!!

You take your marriage certificate to the SS office and they will change your name. Then you take it to the dmv and they will give you a new driver's license with your new name, you do the same for all the other accounts that you have.

No, there's no automatic notification to various government agencies. You have to fill out forms, pay fees, etc to get everything changed. It's easy but a little time-consuming.

You will need to go through the process of changing everything.
Take a copy of your marriage licence with you, in case you are asked for it.
It is very much like notifying people of a change of address.

Your name changes theoretically, but you have to change it on all your legal documents (social security card, bank account, credit cards, etc.) otherwise you could have major problems if someone sends you something using your new married name. The Social Security Administration has a form for you to fill out. You will need a copy of your marriage certificate for that as well as to change your bank account and credit cards.

You have to have the name on your social security card and drivers license changed. It's a legal technicality.
