He is only 10 years old for heaven's sake. He accidentally started the fires, but should have never been playing with matches to begin with. And his parents obviously need to pay more attention (supervise) their child.

But "punish" him...... how? Ten year olds are juveniles. If you fine the parents, they'll be broke and unable to care for themselves or their family. Do you remove the child from his home? If so, where do you put him? In juvenile detention? He'll come out of there a career criminal.

It is another imperative that the child be punished and the best way to do that is to charge the parents! Children are the parents responsibility and whatever they do can be placed on the parents! Why? Does a parent not take pride when their child does good in sports or in their grades? Sure, and they have that right. A child, by law, is not responsible for their actions, but where were the parents? It is as if they, themselves, started the fire and unlike accident vehicle no-fault, they should have been watching their child! God bless. Earl

Oh.... This is what you are talking about.
You should have been more specific the first time.
Millions of dollars, NO, Seperation, BIG NO, Punish YES!

How did this happen?

The parents should have to take the blame for him.
They were not watching him... How did this happen from a ten yr. old. Nobody should be punished until they know what started it!

That's a tough one. Hard to punish a kid that young as an adult, but he definately should be punished. Not at lot of faith that mom and dad would do it, so it should fall to the courts. I think a year of working weekends at some sort of cleanup from the mess would be suitable.

He is just a kid.He did not know that it was going to get as bad as it did so I say NO HARSH PUNISHMENT.He should be punished as the 10 year old he is com on we all did stupid things when we were young, OK maybe we didn't start fires that coast people their homes but he is only 10.He didn't know better.

Depends - If they find that the kid has a lot of behavioral problems, he may benefit from some sort of punishment. If he was just a normal kid who was playing with matches though, I am sure the media circus surrounding him now is punishment enough.

I am not sure about the details of what this child was intending to do, i am guessing it was an accident. If it was an accident, then he shouldnt he punished "severly" he should he punished somewhat though, i am not sure what law inforcement can do with a young child. I hope he learns his lesson though.

Punishment should be based upon intent. Negligence in kids should not be punished as severely as it is punished in adults.

Adults know better, but kids are intrinsically negligent. That's why we have to spend so much time teaching them right and wrong, responsibility, and discipline.

No I think he's too young to take responsibility of the fire, even though it wasn't an accident. But his family should support him and pay a little bit of money only....

poor kid!
