I am traveling down 95 from Virginia to Orlando and want to stop at the beach for a couple of hours on my way. What beach should my fiance, his 8-year-old daughter and I go to? We plan to go to Cocoa Beach on Sunday. Should we go there on the way as well?

Cocoa Beach is not too far away from Orlando, but it's not exactly "on the way" if you're driving down from Virginia. You might be better off stopping in Ormond Beach or Daytona Beach if you're just looking to see a beach on the drive down because Cocoa Beach is farther down I-95 and you almost have to "double back" to get to Orlando. However, if you want to spend a day at the beach, you might want to consider driving to one of the beaches on the Gulf of Mexico because they're usually less crowded and the water is relatively cleaner and calmer.

Ok

If you are planning on going to the beach for a couple of hours stop off at Flagler Beach. It is the closest beach from I-95 anywhere on the east coast. And it is one area that still isn't as highly developed on the Atrlantic side of Florida. I would highly reccomend north of Daytona and south of Jacksonville to avoid traffic. You are going to have enough of that coming into the Orlando area on I-4.

I would save Cocoa Beach for Sunday. Cocoa isn't really on the way as it is beyond the main Orlando Exit(s) (Beachline Expressway and/or I-4) from I-95. You are already driving from Virginia I think any less time on the road would save you some much needed energy :) :) !!!!

I would reccomend highly trying to find some time to go the Gulf Side of Florida. I like the water there, it is cleaner, warmer and a lot calmer than the Atlantic side. Sarasota is nice ( it's about 2 hours south of Orlando) My favorite beach however in Florida is at Captiva Island ( Ft. Myers area). Although it is 4 hours away from Orlando (driving conservatively) your 8 year old daughter will be safer as the water is very calm. For me it's a very relaxing place to go to,
and it's still warm enough to go swimming at the beach ( as it is in Southwest FL)

No matter what you decide to do enjoy your trip to Orlando!!!!! And drive safetly to Florida =) =)

Cocoa Beach is out of your way when heading to Orlando on Southbound 95. Save that for Sunday.

I would hop off 95 at Flagler Beach for a quick diversion (exit 284). After visiting the Beach you can go back to 95, or drive down the coast Road A1A to Ormand or Daytona before heading back over to 95 or I-4

I haven't been in some years, but I always found Cocoa to be kind of dirty. There were alot of biker-type bars and older places along the beach and I kept stepping on spots of tar and pricker bushes. I find the beaches of Melbourne and Palm Bay to be more deserted and pristine. Also, if you go to the very end south end of New Smyrna beach, you can get to Canaveral National Seashore which I also like. Don't go too far down, or you might find some nudists, lol. Neither of these beaches allow driving on them. The beaches you can drive on have that appeal for fun, but I find them dirtier.
