They used sealing wax and a seal. The Seal could have the owners Coat of Arms on it, You could go to Office supply store in your home town and order a Seal, maybe with Your initials entwined on it. When I was a co president of a non profit organization, I ordered a seal with our logo on it. Cost about 46 dollars though. You heat the wax, drop a dollop on the envelope and then press the seal into the wax.

It is called simply a seal and they used wax. Sometimes they used a ring to make the seal. You should try an antique store or do a search on the Internet. You could also make your own seal and probably pay a lot less to have one made. Something like a small rubber stamp, glued to the end of a stick should work very well. Good luck.

Just so you're aware, it's great fun for sealing letters, adds a personal touch, but the wax system very rarely makes it through the postal system intact. Seems only functional if you're handing over the letters yourself.
