This past Tuesday, Oregon voters defeated Measure 50. This ballot inititive would have raised cigarette taxes to help pay for healthcare for poor children and would have made the state eligible for matching funds from the US Congress. However this measure was defeated.

This tax was very similiar to what Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have been proposing for the SCHIP program and Bush vetoed twice. Many of you on YA have said Bush must hate poor children because of this veto. With that said, do citizens of Oregon hate children as well because the in effect vetoed this tax as well.

Because voters in Oregon hate poor children.

Yeah, okay. The real reason: Taxes. People don't like to be oppressed by taxes. Not even the liberals in Oregon like it. They talk about it, but when it comes time to pay, they want someone else to pay for it.

This was a state constitutional amendment!! Even those who support health insurance for children don't think specific taxes should be made part of the state constitution! That's a very slippery path on which to embark.

I don't think the people who say "Bush hates children" after things like this really understand politics. There are political and financial influences that come waaay before consideration of the citizens actually affected by legislation. It's sick, but it happens on both sides and it's one of the biggest problems with government today.

As for voters themselves, well it works much the same way, but minus the politics usually. Answer #1 nails this point.
