As far as meetings to make the company better. Everyone just follows the status quo. No one ever has any unique ideas on how we can make this organization better. They just sit there and wait for me to give them directions on what to do. Then they follow those directions word for word without asking any questions or making any improvements.

Hire more enthusiastic people?

Give them an incentive for showing enthusiasm and initiative. The next time someone goes above and beyond the call, pull out your wallet in front of everyone and give them $5. Do this now and then, and see what happens.

well!!

thats the business culture that is now embedded in your organisation. It can be changed though. Either these ppl really dun feel the need with u around to do other than taking orders or they dun care....

starting from the very process of when u recruit them......try to get them involved....

u can do that by telling them how u got where u r, where was this business, how much it is growing, and how much each one of them can do to make it better...or to maek it worse...ask them questions that u face....to make them think in a more strategic manner....braoder manner...

introduce a smart alec employee ...who likes to give suggestions....either he is smart and tries to be on the top that makes other people annoyed and want to show him they also can contribute etc....and u can make others feel highly about him by acknowledging his willingness to think for the company!

a few good employees boost up the atmosphere....ego comes in the way and helps, introduce competition amongst them...give them projects to work by themselves so that they might feel important having to complete them! show more confidence in them......delegate and empower them greatly...

lastly, dun directly ask them for suggestions, but create and atmosphere where they would like to come up and give suggestions! this is much more effective!

Hope this is useful!

and one more thing...make sure there everything is in alignment with your strategy....their pay, bonus....etc...
show a lot of enthusiasm yourself, and they will like it and follow suite!

thanku!

do you have a suggestion box? sometimes people are afraid of speaking up in front of people(fear of looking stupid) and directly to their boss(fear of being punished). so a suggestion box will offer honest and direct feedback since it would allow them to remain anonymous.

my boss to encourage us to be productive he'll periodically offer the person who works the hardest a $50 gift certificate to some restaurant. i work at fedex so it would be easier to measure who works the "hardest" since we are dealing with loading boxes, but your situation seems a little more abstract maybe offer it to the idea that cuts the most amount of time/effort/cost off doing a task.

but as for comments at where i work plenty of people talk and offer ways to improve the operation, but the managers always stress how they are open to suggestions, you wont get in trouble for constructively criticizing aspects of the job, and you can meet with the managers in private if you need to talk about anything

Read and implement Gung Ho! by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles. It's an awesome book and philosophy on enthusiasm, teamwork and worthwhile work.
