We were discussing news last night about a teacher who had an affair with a 16 year old girl. Now, personally I think teachers who do this violate the trust not just of the parents and fellow teachers, but of students much younger than they. I also know some teens who would go into such a relationship with eyes wide open, and they'll admit they knew exactly what they were doing, because when we're that age you know we think we know it all. Yet someone finds out and the teacher spends the rest of his life in prison. Hubby expressed the view that the teacher should spend a reasonable time in jail, maybe 5 years, with 10 - 20 years probation. Do you think a man should go to jail for life for this type of relationship?

She began cutting herself and that's when a therapist was called in and the girl finally told someone that she had been sexually active. She believed she loved this guy, but she worked with authorities to catch him. She isn't sure how she feels about his going to prison.

I also agree there should be no difference between punishment between male and female teachers. Both know better.

No, what purpose does impisonment attain? What I'd like to see for criminals of all stripes is banishment from the community, such as in the days when England sent its criminals to Australia to kill two birds with one stone: It got rid of the riffraff and populated one of its colonies with WASPs. Nowadays, there are several great locations that need development: barren wastelands and under the seas. You dump the bad guys and gals, and let them fend for themselves. Not only does this save billions of dollars wasted in the prison system, but society rids itself of its worst offenders. Unlike England where you could be hanged (which some preferred to Australia) for stealing a loaf of bread. Times have changed, of course, but not that much.

Society believes that anyone under the age of majority is vulnerable and impressionable and easily manipulated.

The truth is actually the opposite. There are some kids who are scheming little witches, and once they have what they want, their VICTIM is the one who does hard time.

The full truth, on either side, may never be known. I think the teacher needs to do time because s/he knew better and knows s/he is in a position of respect and responsibility.

I also think that parents need to quit defending their children's wickedness. The parents are largely responsible for that.

I don't say this to put down teens. There are many teens who are highly intelligent, who are responsible and who are respectful. But there are a large number who live the entitlement delusion, and they're predators, not victims.

I think when the relationship is with young kids over 12 years old they know exactly it is not legal and they really know what they are doing. I don't think that punishing man for relationship like this for life is right and i think it is stupid and they both should take responsibility or the man should be punish only with a fine or moved away from school but u know the government think we are all criminals and whatever we do except killing is the worst crime. Sometimes people leave prison in 2 years after rape charge, lets be sensible

We should be able to hold people in positions of trust to a higher standard than the average Joe or Joleen... We have to know that these people can care for us in an emergency, and keep us (our Grandchildren) from harm.
These type of situations annoy me to the core... No they will not spend the rest of their lives in prison nor should they, this was not a violent rape. However, it is totally improper for an adult to have an affair with a youth that is still in high school regardless of their position. At a high school age, hormones are raging, teens want to experience the sexual side of life. Teachers should be able to keep themselves in check... Period! I do expect them to spend some time in jail, and I believe they will carry a sexual predator label forever. Counseling is mandatory for these people.

any adult whether teacher or otherwise who has an affair with someone underage is a predator. It does not matter if she wanted to,if police find out they go to jail. If the adult goes looking for a very young person,13 or 14 than he or she is a really bad sexual predator and I believe these people shoul go to jail for a very very long time, and since you cannot fix someone who prefers very young girls/boys than they need to register as a sexual predator and always be under probation.

The legal system shouldn't be one size fits all -- with the factors in this type of situation I can see providing a marraige license up to life in prison relative to the individuals and the actual happenings. It would be almost impossible to sort out the true deserved punishment.

Hard to say, as each case can differ ... the laws ARE to protect children from adult predators who may take unfair advantage of them....and even when the teen is so-called consenting and maybe even provocative, the adult should still know better and be held accountable. as you said many teens think they know it all...when in fact they do not. Was thinking earlier yesterday about the female teacher who ran off with her 6th grade male student...I believe he was 13...Come on! She has got to be warped!

I have never heard of a life sentence for these cases - maybe it was for one in which the child was quite young and it constituted rape? dunno

the priority continues to be being reviewed by utilising the courts (at an identical time as the boy continues to be in penal complex, I understand). yet it somewhat is the hassle with experience-solid law and mandatory minimum sentencing regulations. In Arizona, a guy is dealing with a needed 200 years in penal complex, without parole and no early launch, for possessing kiddy porn. If he'd abducted a toddler, tortured, raped, and murdered her, he'd get 10 years for manslaughter, out on parole in 7, much less a pair years off for solid habit. in the 60's, judges have been sending sixteen 365 days olds to penal complex for 3-5 years for possession of marijuana "to set an occasion." yet those have been individual judges, who might desire to be voted out or overturned, while the above situations are set in concrete by utilising being made into regulation, without provision for assessment or exceptions. solid suggestions seldom make solid regulations.

Why should there be any differences in the sentences between a male and female predator? Both violate the trust of their young students.

Life?! Are you kidding me? That's a little extreme, don't you think? And what about a FEMALE teacher? Seems like they're the ones getting caught fooling around lately.
