OK.....

while I know that the subject of A-Rod is getting extremely old, I wanted to ask this question from the view point of the Yankees and not A-Rod.

The Yankees veminently claimed that they would not persue him if he opted out, and as we all know he did. Now the Yankees are willing to offer him arbitration, my belief is not for the hopes of luring him back to New York for it appears to me that A-Rod is burning bridges that he shouldn't be burning, after all New York made him a very rich man, but instead for the draft picks that they will gain.

Agree or disagree with this position?
Also....
Do you believe that New York is wise in doing this, from a business standpoint, as in "protecting its assets" or do you feel that New York is selling out and going back on its word?

I am anxious to hear what some of you have to say

I absolutely believe that its being done purely for protecting their business assets. It was a smooth idea and if it's Cashman's then I give him credit. Not only will the Yankees get a 1st round draft pick from the team who finally signs L-rod, they get a second draft pick as well. L-rod won't go for a 1 year deal he's too greedy and Boras won't let him cause of his commission. I think its a great move getting something from nothing.

Wayne Cashman, not "Hank the Yank" Steinbrenner is behind this very sensible business move. Why he should protect the Steinbrenner's is beyond me but that's a story for a different time.

Perhaps what we are finally seeing is the apex of free agency as we know it. There is no more envelope to push and both A-Rod and Boras are finding that out. The question of, how much is enough, may finally be answered.

A-Rod does have a habit of burning every bridge he crosses but it appears that this bridge is burning right under his feet. I can't think of a franchise that hasn't learned something by just witnessing what has happened in New York. As a result it's very possible that A-Rod may have nowhere else to turn but New York. The question is do the Steinbrenners put their ego first or try and work out something with Boras? I don't think A-Rod will ever get $350M from anyone. It's just too dam much money. He's NOT worth it!

If arbitration is the avenue to take, fine. Do on to others, as the saying goes and if that means doing a "Herschel Walker" 12 for 1 deal or something like it.........do it!

I don't believe A-Rod would be willing to let this go to arbitration. An arbitrator makes decisions based on precedence as to how other equal players have been compensated and where A-Rod would fit into the mix. Since there has never been any other situations like this the arbitrator would have nothing to base his decision on and A-Rod's future would depend on the whim of the arbitrator. A-Rod is in uncharted territory and I am certain A-Rod would have more confidence in Boras getting the job done when compared to an arbitrator. I also believe the Yankees should not get back into the mix because it sends the wrong message to their fans. They had their chance to work out a deal with A-Rod and it didn't happen, they should just leave it at that.

Business standpoint. The Yankees are only doing it for the draft picks. And it was the Texas Rangers that made A Rod a rich man, not the Yankees. The Rangers gave him the 10 year $250 million contract, not the Yankees, but the Rangers couldn't afford to pay him and was forced to trade him. Boston wanted him, but at a reduced amount, which A Rod actually agreed to, but the player's union wouldn't agree to him reducing the contract amount, so the Yankees got him and the Rangers subsidize the Yankees something like $7 or $8 million a year against the the $25 million a year he makes, the Yankees pay the difference.

The Yankees didnt make ARod a very rich man. The Texas Rangers did. The Yankees offered to make him a RICHER man. But he would not come to the table and he effectively blew them off and insulted them in the process.

Offering free agents arbitration is standard procedure. The Yankees are not backtracking on their word if they offer arbitration. They are merely trying to make sure they get something out of Arod's free agency. They would be foolish not to get the two draft picks. As usual, sports reporting agencies are making a big deal out of something as routine as putting on a jock strap before a game. The do the same thing every off season with the obligatory "The Red Sox put Manny on waivers" story. Just about EVERY player goes on waivers every season. Teams do it just to see what kind of reaction they get. Waivers can be withdrawn first time around. Like the arbitration story, it's a non issue.

Arod will get his contract somewhere. The Angels, Dodgers and Red Sox want him. So do the Giants. He isnt burning bridges. He's playing the market.

It would be interesting if the ARod accepts arbitration though. He might get 30M. The will be the real test of Yankee resolve not to sign him. But that will be the only scenario I see that can force their hand. Because you are correct. The Yankees are one bridge he DID burn.

I agree with the Yankees postion on A-ROD offer him arbitration. Do you think the Yankee orgaization is going to let the soon to be AL MVP go with out getting something in return......a quote by Brian Cashmen "It is about the two draft picks," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the paper. "By offering arbitration, we get the first-round pick of the team that signs him and a sandwich pick." They have until December 1 to offer him arbitration he has until December 7th to give an answer....The Yanks are going to squeeze every last bit they can out of A-ROD to protect there assesets....He is not going to accept the deal due to he wont get what he wants......This is all BUSINESS!!! I dont see A-ROD back in pinstripes!!!

while the two components conform to pass to the arbitrator they are going to be certain via the determination. i think of it particularly is a robust pass on behalf of Angels administration with the aid of fact $12.5 million is a extensive variety and that i'm undecided the arbitrator will award that quantity. ok-Rod would be an Angel and there is no longer something for the followers to fret approximately.

The draft picks are worth a lot to the talented scouts in the Yankee organization. They know A-Rod will not accept and it's merely a business ploy to obtain the picks. This one is pretty obvious and it is a great move by the Yanks to throw it in A-Rod's face one last time.

There is no reason not to offer arbitration. If A-Rod refuses, they've gained themselves a couple draft picks. And he will refuse - the last thing he and Scott Boras want is an arbitrator deciding his value.

I was actually surprized ti hear this news....but after lengthy convesations with you and others; I realized that from a business standpoint it makes good sense.

My hope is that the yankees sign (sorry, kat) but I want to see the yankees go winless in the world series again.
