I can remember my dad building a boat, and I was two years old the summer he built it. It's a very fuzzy memory though. I have some very vivid early memories from around three years old. It's odd that my husband can't even remember much about first grade. Can't remember his teachers' names or anything. Interesting to compare.

Wow, y'all are giving some very sweet answers, and some sad ones too. It's a shame all children can't have the loving memories.

Peapie, I think that's amazing, and yes, I do believe you. I can remember so far back that I don't find it unbelievable that others can remember further back than I can.

Well Teresa - it's me again, CJ - and yes I can remember back a very long way! I was about 18 months or maybe 2 years old when this happened! I was in London and WW2 was in full swing. A doodle-bug (a German incendiary/flying fire bomb) hit our house - I was on the 3rd floor in my crib! My cousin woke me up and threw me out of the window - I was on fire - I landed in the bushes below, my other cousins did not catch me in time - no broken bones but to this day I have burn scars on my back, and had to had several reconstructive surgeries on my face - followed by plastic surgeries. All completed during my 17th year. School was miserable because of my scars. Kids are mean. But that was a long time ago and I hope and pray that I never have to go thru that again. To this day I am terrified of fire! Do you blame me?!!!!!! Good question!

I remember something that took place when I when about 2 and a 1/2. My next vivid memory is when I am four. After that it was five and I remember everything sense then. Of course I can't remember what I want at the grocery store with out a list if I need more than two items. I only remember about 1/2 of my teacher's names, but I remember everyone of our pet's names and there was a LOT.

I have had some similar memories mention good and bad, but my first memory was..........ARE YOU READY!!!????
My birth!
NO JOKE! I remember hearing my mom's voice sort of garble and hearing the water, like being under water, and pitch black...feeling comfortable and then feeling pressure and then nothing and then a bright old fashion surgery light. Of course when I was small I had no frame of reference for it, all this was just a memory that I did not know what it was nor did I have words for it but as I got to be around 8 and my brother and sister-in-law were having a baby it started to make sense to me. I remember telling my little friends about it and then older friends and nobody believed me and you probably don't either! lol! But that is true.

My earliest childhood memory was back when I went see my brother at his graduation from the Marines in Paris Island, South Carolina. It was not snowing or anything but one of the bridges in West Virgina was covered with ice and there was about 50 cars flipped and wreck on the sides of the road. People were hanging out of the windows. Ambulances, Firetrucks, and Cops were sliding all over the road. We were driving between 2 18 wheelers. It was the biggest scare of my life. We could have gotten killed so easily.

It is difficult to retain long-term memories before the age of 3. The concept of time to a child differs from that of an adult. My earliest memory is when I was 4 years old, and I was walking in the lake at the neighborhood park. A stranger grabbed me and took me to the police station where I played Mr. Potato Head and ate donuts until my mom freaked out and picked me up.

I remember seeing a baby laying on my grandmothers couch staring at the lights and decorations on the Christmas tree in the corner of the living room at my grandmothers house, late in the 40's. And after the baby was picked up, I decided I wanted to see how the tree looked through that babies' eyes, since it just stared and stared at that tree. So I climbed up on the couch, and layed down and stared at the tree too. And I decided it looked just as pretty as when I was standing and looking at it LOL. I must have been around 2, since there were only two years between me and the baby, who was my first cousin, Ricky.

I remember very vaguely, my sister as a baby in her high chair in Washington DC. I was about 3 then. I also remember Christmas when I was 4 years old. I got a drum and some books and dolls.

In the movie Forrest Gump remember when Forrest met Ginny on the school bus and I think the narrater said "no one ever ask me what I thought" I looked like Ginny and felt invisible.
One afternoon my family was in our front yard. The adults were talking and I was playing on the ground I felt 100 miles away. My dad came over kneeled to eye level
and took a dollar bill out of his wallet (a vast amount in 1951 when I was 4) He looked straight into my eyes and said "This is yours, spend it anyway you want", what I HEARD was you are important, valuable and I DO see you! Money wasn't my profit, dad made a huge deposit in my heart and my memories.

3. Having my fingers smashed in a car door. I don't remember that age until mom told me, but do remember the incident very well. It is part of trauma we remember the most. Funny a lot of memories are suppressed and come out later in life.

Must have been 3 - 4. I remember sitting on a swing in the back yard, with a box of animal crackers. Mom was taking my picture.
