The average is the total of 4 scores divided by 4. Let the new score be S and the total of the others is 88*3 = 264 since that will make the average 88).

So (264+S)/4 = 92. Multiply both sides by 4 to get 264+S = 368
Subtract 264 from both sides to get S = 368-264 = 104.

That means he will never even get the 92, the lowest one there.

The highest he could get would be if he got 100 on the last test which would give him 364/4 = 91 for his average.

To do this, first you have to multiply 3 by 88. This is your sum that you divide by three to get the current average of 88. Ok, so multiply 3 by 88, then this sum plus X over 4 equals whatever average you want A-E. So if choosing 92, for example, multiply 92 by 4, subtract the 3 multiplied by 88 sum and then you have X, the score on the fourth test.

Questions like these come up a lot on placement exams and standardized tests, such as the SAT, but now that you know how to do it you know just how easy they are.
