It's a metaphor. You can tell metaphors because the literal meaning is different from the real meaning. You're not actually going out to pick up a spade and dig a hole in the ground for your own coffin to be lowered into, although that's what the phrase literally means. The real meaning is that you're going to do something which will create trouble for yourself.

If you attempt to be "goth-esque" that is all you will ever be. Just an imitation. Imitation is the exact OPPOSITE of the goal of goth music. If you want to be another Evanescence then by all means sing about graveyards in the same wailing, butt-roock guitar driven style. You will be pigeon-holed as a copycat. Which would be an awful shame as I'm sure you've got more talent than that. If you want to write interesting goth-like music you will need to create your own sound. You will probably need to work with other musicians in order to accomplish this unless you are truly multi-talented and can play all of the instruments that you desire to use. How to be fascinating, without going over the line to cheese-tastic? Have a sense of humor or a wit in your lyrics. The whole world is not doom and gloom. Life isn't all tragic dreamscapes and black roses. Even if it were, clever turns of phrase are more effective than cookie-cutter lamenting. Instead of crying about digging your lover's grave, try grumbling about cleaning the dirt off your boots. You'll stand a better chance of standing out and having a little more fun. Check out bands like Type O Negative, KMFDM, The Birthday Massacre (more along your current tastes), VNV Nation (almost cheesy, but they mean it so much), Mindless Self Indulgence (in your face silly, yet smart), Ministry, and even Marilyn Manson wrote some meaningful songs with neat turns of phrase. If you really want to be a credible success, don't try to make 14 year olds idenitify with your plight. Make a jaded 18+ goth laugh and love you.

A very short one by the look of it.
I imagine it comes from the days when if you were poor you had to dig your own grave to save money, either that or its a term used to refer to indulging in an act whereby the outcome is of no benefit to you, sometimes used as you are slowly dropping yourself in the smelly stuff as you explain away something you have little idea about or have a pathetic excuse for that everyone else knows is not true.
Hope that helps, meanwhile have a look at this question please

If you say that someone is digging his own grave, you are warning him that he is doing something foolish or dangerous that will cause his own failure. For example....The magazine is not trying to ruin his career, the man is digging his own grave by refusing an interview.

I'd call it a figure of speech, perhaps an idiom.
