The arithmetic mean is the sum of the numbers divided by the number of items added.
There are 3 items here so the mean is
(4x+5 + 7x-6 + -8x+2)/3
= (4x+7x-8x + 5-6+2)/3
= (3x+1)/3
= x + 1/3
