Are you sure it wasn't + one point? I've noticed that many times when I come to YA it says "thanks for visiting" +1 point.
When you ask a question you have 5 points taken away, when you answer a question you get 2 points added and when you vote on an undecided question you get one point added.

5 points off for asking a question, 2 points for answering, 3 for choosing a best answer to your question......or points off if a question or answer of yours is deleted.....you'll have to go and answer a few to get your points back.

erm, writing a questions takes off points, deleting something your wrote takes off points, writing something that you shouldn't have and has been taken off by yahoo also deducts points.... that's all i can think of.
