3rd is like one gear lower? actually just use drive most the time and 3rd when stuck in town traffic. The manual shift fearure is entertaining too. There is a book in the glove box yoou have not studied yet take it out and learn the features of your investment.

Drive is general transmission use (like rpms rise off the line then you feel a nudge and the rpms drop and rise again - this is your transmission engaging the engine). Now there's a manual selection for the transmission which 1st is really for driving in heavy snow or sludgy mud (anything that is a severe condition) and then second for speeding up generally to under 20 because 1 really only allow mabey 15 m.p.h. under normal throttle. Third ma by be used when up to speed in these conditions (but rarely used). Generally though when on the interstate and there's a large hill and say the car is really struggling in its 5th and 4th gears - you would simply push the shifter to third. I also recommend in bumper to bumper 2nd gear - it offers a huge saving in mileage. Hope this helps girly :)

Continue to put your car in drive. Assuming that you're not a hot-rodder. The 3 only allows the transmission to shift up to third gear, locking out 4th (and 5th if you're car is a 5 speed automatic). The 3 is for when you don't want the transmission to engage the higher gears, allowing the engine to "tach out" a little, thus giving you more power. In theory. I've played with this in the automatics that I've owned in the past and at times I forgot to shift it up, so if you decide to toy with it a little, be careful ;)

I suggest to put the car in drive because 3rd you will gain performance but lose gas mileage. The true difference is that your car will not go into overdrive. So you should keep it in drive.
