You can only get government assistance if you are poor. You can only make so much money to qualify. The qualifications vary from state to state. They do also qualify for free medical care, which is called Medicaid. You are limited in some states how long you can receive certain benefits, like welfare, which is a check every month. Your children can stay on Medicaid, though. They have all sorts of programs. Also, these kids qualify for free lunches at school, most likely, and probably get food stamps as well.
Boy, that's amazing that even the rich people in UK can get benefits for their children. Here in the U.S. it is seen as a stigma to take handouts from the government. I think the climate of the country is different here. People like to be self-sufficient and not seem like freeloaders. I think maybe that's where this perception of the U.S. not having these programs stems from, but it is supposed to be set up to only help the poor or those down on their luck for a short period of time.

We do have medicaid (free insurance paid for by the government), but you have to be very poor in order to qualify for it. Most people just add their children on to their insurance plans that their employers provide as a benefit to them. Most people have to pay something, but it's generally cheaper than going out and buying your own private insurance not through your employer, because it's group insurance and the rates are better.
Where it gets really tricky is when a person makes *juuuuussst* over the limit for qualifying for medicaid, yet they don't have enough money to insure themselves or a child. That really stinks. :(

to my knowledge, there is nothing like that in the u.s. but each state makes it's own rules regarding some things. here in illinois, we have whats called kidcare insurance. every child is entitled to health care even if the parents have employment. it's not the greatest but it's something. if one chooses not to use that, we have county health depts. which have lower rates. again, not the best.most people rely on insurance from their employer but some of those aren't great either. it's up to the business what type of ins. they carry.

Poor families in the US can receive medical care, food, and free or reduced lunches in school for their children. This is not offered to people with middle class incomes and above.

In the US you must qualify by certain income guidelines to receive any benefits at all. That includes welfare, medicaid and food stamps.

It depends on who voted for what loon in government, it is all about democracy, and if you're thinking of moving here, don't even think about it, because we have enough illegal immigrants here as it is!
