Try this -- first shut the water off. now flush the toilet,so that no water will come back into the holding tank. Get your self a big box of baking soda and a big bottle of regular vinegar. Put half the box of soda into the bowl, and pour vinegar in. stand back and watch the action. Keep doing this until it bubbles way down in the pipe. get your self an empty ice cream bucket and pour some water down. Repeat until water runs on its own and pipe is clear of blockage. Now turn on water and flush. If you have used enough baking soda and vinegar the toilet should work fine. No tosic fumes and its enviromentally safe. Do the same to the sinks as the blockage could come from there. Also if you happen to put grease in your sink, and use Drano then you have one big lump of solid soap. The main ingredient in drano is lye,and the main ingredient in your bar soap. If this does not work, then you need a plumber, with a snake.

You can use a mop but ensure that the head of the mop is attached securely to the pole or you'll end up with the mop head adding to your problems.
You could also try a hosepipe.
When I had this problem I called out a drain person from yellow pages - it was a bank holiday about 4 years ago and they only charged £15. Although when they arrived they did try to make the problem sound a lot worse than it was and started talking about having to use some sort of pump before they even tried to unblock it. If they had used the pump thing it would have cost me about £130 so I told them to either unblock it without a pump for £15 or sling their hook with no money at all. Strangely enough they did it for £15 with a type of plunger that I hadn't seen before. I had rang numerous places in yellow pages prior to finding this company and some of them were charging a fortune for call out but if you stick to your guns - if you need to call somebody - you may just get lucky like I did. Oh and by the way one of the companies that I rang for a quote gave some sort of silly price so I said no thank you. Within 15 minutes they were back on the phone telling me that fortunately they were working in my area and said they could be round to my house in ten minutes - they obviously just expected me to agree but then I asked them what company they were ringing from and realised it was one of the companies with a stupid price - they were obviously trying to call my bluff - so be warned - good luck.

Before doing nasty messy things inside the house, try finding the outside manhole cover where the soil pipe from your toilet meets the main sewer. Lift the cover with the aid ,of a screwdriver, bent piece of metal or whatever. You may find the blockage starts from here in which case you will need to hire or buy a set of drain rods which will allow you to push the blockage in the direction the drain or sewer runs. Usually after a little effort, the whole blockage will go winging on its way with a lovely sucking sound.

Try to use a toilet brush. Push it down the toilet lots of times until the water runs free. If this does not work you will need to open the inspection port of the sever to see if there is any blockages in the sever.

You can purchase an inexpensive snake to run down the toilet that should clear most clogs. If this does not work then you may need the help of a professional because the power snakes are expensive to buy and dangerous to use.

It will help you certainly to know the cause of the block.
There are a few methods you can use. I prefer the final one I offer.
Plunger
Snake
Your hand
Pull the toilet; remove the block; replace the wax ring; re-set the toilet; and flush.

I had the same problem with my toilet and it went on for months, until i had a friend of mine look at it. He ended up pulling up the commode from the floor and turning it upside down...there was a screwdriver stuck in it, we think that it had fell in there when they installed the commode, because it wasn't mine, and it had been there awhile it was rusty. So maybe you can pull it up, turn it upside down and see whats going on under there, then you of course have to buy a new wax ring to set it back.

Mr Muscle Toilet unblocker or a long piece of curtain wire - push it down as far as you can and it should unblock - if not it is further down in your drain and you would need a plumber.

The best way is with a plunger. If you can get hold of a drain rod with a rubber plunging disc on the end that will work best.
