the us is the largest debtor nation in the world, we import almost everything we consume with money borrowed from foreign countries. we have a huge trade deficit with china, canada, japan and other nations. the reason for this is that the us does not sell enough goods and services overseas, and that there is little savings in this country and excessive consumption. the real concern is what will happen if other countries stop lending us money to keep the economy going. there is a lot of information available on this on the internet if you are interested.

Actually, the US is the one who loans the least to the rest of the world.
Japan, the EU (Germany/France/Italy) and China help the world more.
So if the US stopped it wont affect the world which represents 85% of cumulated GDP.
but it will affect the US as they would loose their ties to other countries, their business contracts, their standing, and as a result would become a big redneck territory

Many US businesses would go bankrupt.
US foreign aid to the rest of the world is conditional on the money being spent in the US. This is how the government offers indirect subsidies to American businesses.

Not a good idea. Look at countries which are isolated: North Korea and Burma/Myanmar. They are in bad shape, all around.
