im 21 and i feel the exact same way as you do...you feel empty cuz you dont feel like you serve a purpose...try to find who you are and where you belong...i have all the material possessions i could possisbly ask for too and they dont mean a thing to me and just like you said, shopping gets me so happy but only for a small period of time...try finding someway to help others and feel useful like voluteering somewhere or just finding a hobby you can stick to to keep yourself busy

You cannot trust every other person you meet as its really difficult to find the right person. So the only way out to keep yourself filled and happy is you better start taking care of elders and serving poor. When you buy something for yourself, take care of the needy that what they might NEED? winter is coming up, so you can buy some oldies warm clothes, or some nice chocolates for kids.

Believe me this will fill your emptiness. I do feel the same way as you do and I help myself by helping others and I'm all filled with lots of happiness and prays which I get as a reward from others. :)

This is going to sound strange, but..

We are defined by out desires. You feel empty because you do not desire enough.

Humans are designed to solve problems, when we don't have any problems we go nuts, we create them just to have something to do.

This is why boys living in a peaceful society will go online to fight battles.

To be happy you must simply desire something that takes an effort on your part to achieve or acquire.

Buying stuff make you temporally happy because biologically speaking 'happiness' is the emotional reward for accomplishing or acquiring something.

GETTING the thing is what makes you happy. Having something only makes you happy if having it helps you GET something else you want.

Happiness is supposed to drive you to accomplish/acquire things. If a thing is too easy to get, the happiness is short lived.

Got it? You need a great big goal. Something it would be amazingly cool to have, or do or be.

Try donating some of your stuff to less fortunate people. Holiday season is approaching. Go shopping for other people without purchasing anything for yourself. You really should volunteer your time to help people in your community. There are children that go to school without a coat, food, whatever because their parents can't afford them or lost everything in some natural disaster. Help others in need and you will see how unimportant the material possessions are.

You may have a physical disorder that is causing this. Several hormones and chemicals are involved in mood. See a doctor.
