i've never used one,do they have to be connected to a landline?Do you have to be paying an isp to be able to access the net?Do they have to be plugged into the mains? thanx .plz be kind Im used to the old fashioned desk top!

Lap tops are for convenience of being able to carry your computer with you, apart from that they are the same or just about. If you want to connect to the net then you can do so with the LAN socket ( cable ) as on a normal desktop computer or by the USB port, or by WIFI if you have it built in or a WIFI adaptor, these come in all sorts of shapes and sizes such as USB key PCMCIA cards that slot into the lap top, the advantage of WIFI is you can connect almost any where there is a WIFI signal, and last of all lap tops work on the mains or the on board battery.

a laptop computer is just like a PC the difference is; Laptops has Battry supply and you have not to connect your computer to Power all the time.
The mainboard and it's hardware is not accecible easyly.
for internet you should pay to an ISP but maybe you can filnd some offers which give you free internet for a while.

Once they are charged they run off a battery! If you have wifi then the internet runs off a wireless card off a router which is connected to a landline! If your using dialup then it will be directly connected to a landline!
