Amalia - this is the best in my opinion
Amahlia
Amaliah
Amaleah - if you want accent on the LEE part...
Amalea
Emaleah - like the other.. but Eh-mah-LEE-ah
I like the sound of this name.. but I don't think her nickname would be Mia...
if you want "Mia" what about Miranda or Miriam? or just go with Mia.
My favourite is Miranda with nickname Mia.

Well if you yourself are not sure how to spell that name, then it's a pretty safe bet no one else will either. People will probably mispell her name a lot or constantly asking her to spell it. But it IS a very pretty name and very unique so if you like it then go with it. Another alternative could be to just drop the A all together and go with Maliah (various ways to spell this one too) Oh, and Mia is a very cute name :0)

Surely Emily would be best.
Made up names like Ahmaleah are tacky and trashy and she will be stigmatised.Ok if she wants to spend her life in a trailer park or on a council estate
She won't spend a lifetime having to spell it out for people who will look at her with that 'what a dumb name' expression.
You can still call her Mia as a nickname. I call one of my daughters Boo and the other Roo and that's nothing like their names.

Mia is a gorgeous name! Just by itself...My cat is called Mia and she is divine! and i have another friend called Mia... Everyone seems to really like that name..Probably helps that she is stunning herself... Its nice, yes, unusual, yes, nice! No seriously Id go for it. Its a lovely name.. Dont like the other names at all. Amelia is pretty and will be shortened to millie. Maria is lovely for an Italian or spanish person... not your baby. Its too old.. Ah-mah-Lee? Blerrrgh.... sorry

I have to agree with you. There's absolutely nothing wrong with giving her a formal option, even if you plan on using Mia as a nickname. She may one day appreciate the choice. ;)
I wouldn't bother toying with any of the pronunciations (it really isn't necessary), but Mia is also used as a nickname for:
Amalia (ah-MAH-lee-ah ... identical to what you want, but stressed on the second syllable)
Emilia (e-MEEL-yah)
Emelina (em-e-LEEN-a)
Matilda or Mathilde (the second having a "TEEL" rather than "TIL" sound)
Miriam
Hope that helps. ;)

What about using a very formal second name with it like:
Mia Charlotte
Mia Elizabeth
Mia Katherine
Mia Erin
Mia Alexandra
Mia Isabella
Mia Amanda
I tend to be for names that the child won't have to explain or have trouble learning to write and that teachers and other children can easily pronounce. Saves the child from being made fun of and getting unwanted attention.

Congratulations mommy-to-be!
I love Mia, but I understand wanting to have something formal. The name Amalia is lovely! I don't think a lot of people would confuse the pronunciation -- if they did, a simple correction is all it takes :-) Mia for Amalia -- go for it!
God bless!
