Republicans are for free enterprise (the basis of capitalism)
Democrats are for socialism/communism plus they are jackasses (hey - it is their party's symbol!)

There are no significant differences. They both advocate a massive government at home and abroad (which is why all the major Democrats voted for the War on Iraq and why George Bush ran on no nation-building in 2000 against the Democrats; it is also why the Republicans doubled the size of the Department of Education and passed Medicare Part D).

The Democrats and Republicans are merely 2 sides of the same party.

I am not surprised that you are receiving such convoluted answers to a simple question. Many people consider themselves to be one or the other without any real understanding of the difference. They cling to their party with a loyalty of a sports fan.

Here is the difference between the Republican Party's tendencies and the Democrat Party's tendencies:

The Republicans are the home of Conservatism. Conservatism believes in what is referred to as an "originalist" interpretation of the Constitution. In other words, the Constitution's intents are clearly spelled out in the Federalist Papers and other writings of the people who actually wrote it.

The Democrats are the home of Liberalism. Liberalism believes that the Constitution is a "living document". In other words, the Constitution can be interpreted to mean whatever current social pressures want it to mean.

The Republicans believe that if some part of the Constitution needs revision, the country should adhere to the amendment process as specified in the Constitution itself.

The Democrats believe that if some part of the Constitution need revision, they just need to stack the Supreme Court with Liberal Justices and they will decide to interpret the Constitution in such a way as to grant new rights or retard old rights in anyway that suits the current thinking.

Republicans believe in traditional American standards.

The Democrats find traditions to be archaic and irrelevant.

Republicans believe that America has its own culture, the culture of the "rugged individualist", liberty and minimum government interference or regulation.

Democrats believe in multi-culturism. They believe that our own culture is not superior to any other.

Republicans see America as a giant melting pot into which all immigrants eventually blend in and in doing so, add thier own unique flavor to the mix.

Democrats see America as a mosaic where imigrants do not necessarily blend in and often stay in separate groups still closely associating themselves with the country of origin.

Republicans believe in people taking responsibility for their own actions.

Democrats believe in separating people into groups each with its own agenda and list of grievances and preceiving themsleves as "victims" of the wealthy and/or more powerful.

Republicans believe in charity.

Democrats believe in taxation and redistribution of wealth.

There are many, many such differences. Those who claim that there is no difference are either uninformed or just making excuses for their own laziness.

Get rich quick schemes in the capitalist business world, (buyouts, IPOs, conglomerates, acquisitions, mergers, and the stock market), do not actually work. Remaining solvent does not actually exist within false economics capitalism.

Profit existing in the capitalist business world, or millionaires existing within capitalism, is pathological deception committed by the 21 organizations spying on the population with plain clothes agents, (with covert fake names and fake backgrounds).

Actual economics is the persons paying the monthly business loan payments of companies voting at work in order to control the property they are paying for.

Capitalism is the psychology of imaginary parents, false economics, and the criminal deception of employees that are paying the bills (including the stocks and bonds, or shares) of companies.

Anti-democracy republicanism is the psychology of imaginary parents, and false government.

well generally it deals with opposites- reps are pro-war, dems are anti-war, (assume that order hence on)
pro-life, pro-choice
anti-gay, pro gay
there's a couple of others, but the truth is they're just stereotypical guidelines, so you'd be better treating them as such. democrats focus on preserving rights, republicans focus on preserving tradition- but both parties break rules and get dirty- and those running for office usually try to appeal to both sides, so there's really no black and white to it. that's my opinion, now for wikipedia: The republican party is more socially conservative and economically libertarian, whereas the democratic party has recently had more centrist economic views, and progressive social ones

But seeing as how there are both liberal republicans and conservative democrats, It really is up to the person- I'd say it's more whether you are conservative, centrist, progressive, liberal, libertarian, etc. In each of the national categories (i.e. economic, social, etc.) that really counts.

Liberal index. The higher the number the more liberal-- Democrats: Obama 84.3; Edwards 79.2; Clinton 78.8. The Republicans: Paul 48.1; Giuliani 40.0; McCain 40.0; Romney 32.1; Thompson 17.9. Huckabee is the most conservative of all the candidates and Obama is the most liberal according to the OTB rankings of stands and/or votes in Congress. There is a clear dividing line here. The most liberal Republican (Paul) is much more conservative than the least liberal Democrat by 20 points.

It's like this: When our country is attacked by terrorists and thousands of innocent lives are lost Republicans want to retaliate to make sure it doesn't happen again. Democrats however main focus is how to build a memorial, where to put the memorial, is the memorial going to offend anyone?...

republicans are conservative and democrats tend to be more liberal. It is hard to describe exactly the difference without ceating stereotypes. Republicans tend to support white collar jobs, money and upper middle to high class. Democrats tend to support middle and lower class, homosexuals, african americans.
