is a good graphics card mainly for gaming purposes? For instances, if im going to watch TV and videos on it, it won't have an effect on quality of that will it?

Good HD video capability is available even in budget graphics cards. The same Purevideo HD that is available in high end Geforce 8800 series cards can be found on cheap Geforce 8500GT. ATI's Universal Video Decoder is also available on the cheap HD2400 Pro. The video processor is actually separate from the graphics processor BUT they are all in one chip.

Your graphics card will be required for all video applications and 3D games. If you have an integrated video card (if not, don't expect to watch anything), it should be sufficient for watching standard videos (HD need the new vid cards).
