The Byzantines thought themselves to be far more cultured and superior than the barbarians of the west. The Crusades were seen as more of a danger than help- the Crusaders were Roman Catholics (danger to the Orthodox Church) and intended to occupy the lands which the Byzantines considered their own (even though they lost them and were unable to recapture them) which led to Byzantine sabotage of Poor Peter's Crusade (and it's anihilation) and of every subsequent Crusade
One of the reasons for the ultimate failure of the Crusades was the backstabbing done by the Byzantines- returned in trumps when the fourth crusade attacked Byzantium
