It is an phenomenon that seems to repeat itself throughout history, and affects every form of government even attempted communism. But I am wondering is there a name for it?

Those in power often seem to become narcissistic, and start to view politics as a game. The actual form of government takes on a life of its own, and people seem to enjoy the political "lifestyle".

It becomes an game almost like that played by socialites. It is all about influence, and manipulation. Often the issues themselves, actually affecting the common people, are not even cared about.

This happens repeatedly, and all you have to do is look at society. The politician is like an actor. He strives to uphold an image, and has a retinue to do so. He strives to be re-elected. He cares more about fulfilling his image and popularity than the actual issues he is concered with. He even has someone else write speeches.

I wonder what sociology or psychology considers the cause of this, and why?

Yours is a question that is answered individually for every person. I however choose to call it Criminal Corruption. When you disregard the rights of others who have voted you into office or you wouldn't be there. Even if you work for someone who was voted into office, someone in power got their job because they gained the trust and loyality of the people. When ethics and the good of the people are tossed aside to pursue the personal aims (power, games, sexual scandal, kick-backs) of the one entrusted with the good of the people, that is criminal corruption as Richard Nixon learned in 1974 and Clintons scandal where he refused to step down and haunts his and his wifes ambitions to this day. Oh! There's another word to describe the mentally of those in political power who treat their authority like a game with ill effects. It is called Stupid. With the technology nowadays and whatever Godly power made our universe and imposes the law of divine providence, it is Stupid to think that God will not take notice and deal an incredibly harsh blow to those who deceive with games and betrayed the people who gave them an incredible oppritunity to serve their country proudly. Those in politics need to have this quote boldly hung on their livingroom walls in the White House or the rich homes they live in financed by the voters "What a tangled web we weave once we practice to deceive." Happy Holidays

Yes definitely there is! If they actually personally want the job, then they should automatically be disqualified.
