I now need a ride on mower as moved to acreage but b4 i go to the salesman at thew local mower centre, i wish to not be sold what they want to sell me so what should i ask or look out for. I have approx 2 acres and not hilly, what is the best/reliable engine and what is hydrostatic gears etc etc. I fear the salesman wills sell me something i not fully understand. What brands should i avoid too. I am located in Australia.

I'm in Queensland and have bought a MTD brand 42" cutting blade Ride On. It was just under $3000 but really worth the money. It has a heap of safety things like seat sensor (where if you move out of the seat the engine cuts out) the blade engagement does not work unless you are in neutral. The only annoying thing is that you cannot reverse with the blade engaged, it is a bit of a hassle but something I can learn to live with - lol as there is 5 acres to mow and a push mower just ain't gonna work!!!

First two answers are good advice. I had a 4 acre block, flat/gently undulating. I had a John Deere 20hp V twin with 48" cut, side discharge also had mulching capability . Lawn area 2.5 - 3 acre, approx 2 hours cutting time.
Engine Briggs & Stratton with cast iron sleeves in bore
Commercial/Industrial engine. Also had cruise control and what I used as Beer Can holders
Many brands of reliable engines, main thing is it is a Commercial/Industrial engine
Hydrostatic is like an automatic gear box had a forward and reverse pedal.
Geared Models you use a clutch and select the gear
When you find a mower you like get them to come to your place to do a demo and let you try it out
Once you have your mower follow the maintenance schedule exactly, wether you do servicing or have dealer do it you are protecting your investment and ensuring it lasts for many years

i've got had Murray, Snapper and a Sears Craftsman and the Craftsman has been stunning. i in my view savour mowing now. With the Snapper, I had to have it worked on each year I had it. A spring did no longer bypass that i did no longer could call the broking as much as come back get it and paintings on it. i've got had the Craftsman now for 3 yrs and only recently replaced the battery, that's it. it incredibly is a 18 hp and at $one thousand i've got faith like it incredibly is a thieve.
