How can I increase the clock speed on my AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Processor, with a maximum clock speed of 2.41GHz?
When I am using my computer the clock speed always seems to be 950-1000MHz, and I want to know how to make it go higher. I know that there's a chance it can overheat and everything, but it seems like it should be fine going a little faster than just 900MHz, if it's capable of 2.41GHz. I was thinking something like 1.5GHz. Do you think that would be ok, and can you tell me how to do it?

Thanks for the help,
Matt

Just disable the Cool n Quiet option in BIOS. Cool n Quiet automatically downclocks your processor at no or low load. Processor should then always run at default speed.

Most modern chips have power saving methods which reduce the clock speed during idle time which would explain the variation. However that does seem a very low speed in general, it is worth checking in the BIOS at startup (usually done by pressing F2 or Del to get into "setup" when the computer is first turned on) as there may be a simple setting there to increase it to the correct speed.

Frankly, AMD 64 processors are so cheap now that overclocking is a rather silly thing and subjects all your hardware to damage and overheating, not just the CPU.
Remember all the money spent on exotic heatsinks, thermal paste, water blocks, and huge fans is better spent on the more expensive processor.
I have an X2 3800+ and am going to get an X2 6000+ because its a no-tweak drop in replacement. S939 chips are still available so if you are still single core, I highly recommend going dual core if you aren't already there.

YOUR UNDER CLOCKED Sorry guys , but an amd 64 3800 is supposed to be running at 2.41 ghz First set the cpu voltage, then adjust your ht You must use the number 200 for pc3200 ram and devide 200 into 1000 or 2000 =5x or 10 x(start with 5x and raise in 1x increments. Look up your voltage for your ram and its timing and set them in bios as well. amd 3800d (d is socket 939) the next letter( a= variable e= 1.50 I = 1.40 k=1.35) thats your voltage. The chip revision might not be set in your bios Flash your bios to the newest update and then adjust settings.

Hillary clearly doesn't know what she's talking about.

the clock speed on your processor shouldn't be varying. it should be operating at the same speed while you're using it...

if your motherboard allows it, boot up your computer, and in the BIOS there should be a hardware section about clock speed.

i dont recommend overclocking it much if you dont' know what you're doing, you risk frying the entire thing. visit some overclocking forums before you play with any settings.

try taking a look at what its running at under a full load because most modern CPUs will lower the GHZ to save heat and electricity.... if its still running at 900 to 1000 then you need to over clock it. but if you do make sure you put a bigger CPU fan and have a well ventilated system... there are plenty of web sites that will give you step by step instructions on how to overclock your system.

A rule of thumb is that AMD helpfully places X2, X3, or X4 in all of their processor names that might actually assist you % out the style of cores. If this identifier is lacking, it is single middle.
