Gene Wilder's version is better, beyond any comparison. It offered innocence, moral, creativity, mystery, awe, and scariness. It had a great balance of parts, and Gene Wilder did an excellent job of portraying Willie Wonka.
I love Johnny Depp as an actor, and I love Tim Burton as a director, but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was very disappointing. It was too modernized, and it captured none of the magic of the original. Depp was creepy and corny, and without any sort of charm or redemption, the Oompa Loompas were ridiculous, and overall it just never managed to live up to expectation.
I had hoped for a possibly darker version, with more technical genius, better visuals, and good acting by Depp, but the movie was just, well, a bit stupid.

I thought Gene Wilder was a bit creepy to be honest. I preferred Johnny Depp's interpretation because it explained more about Willy Wonka's background and early life.
Plus I heart Johnny Depp :)

Are you aff yer heid? That creepy, Michael Jackson thing is a masterstroke. Willie Wonka with Gene Wilder never captured the darkness of the character, it's a brilliant film.

Gene Wilder. Johnny Depp made the movie kind of creepy. Although...his did follow the book more accurately.

Overall, Johhny Depp version although the original Oompah Loompahs were better, and not sure if Tim Burton over darkened the story...Burton would have been better on the sequel, the Great Glass Elevator, which was dark

The Gene Wilder version. It was funnier, and more how I imagined the book to be.
I frankly though Johnny Depp was scary, and too camp.
