My mom burned her hands really badly on a heating stove when she was 3 years old and they were operated on when it happened but she'd always had horrible problems with her hands since. Recently I've talked her into seeing a specialist but now we aren't sure what kind of specialist to see, a burn specialist or a hand specialist? Does anyone have any advice? Sorry I don't have technical terms for these things.

A reconstruction specialist (a form of plastic surgery) would probably be the best person to start with; usually there are doctors who specialize in burns. Contact your nearest teaching hospital, where you can probably get a name of such a doctor (there aren't very many around), or at a national burn center.

Other doctors who might be involved in the surgery would include a neurosurgeon (who would focus on nerves) and a hand surgeon (who would focus on the tendons and muscles). But I would start with the reconstructive surgeon first. There have been lots of innovations in the field since your mom was burned as a child, and it may take more than one surgery, but you should be able to see some progress. Good luck to her!

Since u r talking about scar tissue, a plastic surgeon that specializes in hand reconstruction would be my guess... they have made great strides in this field.
