I have to make a children's book as an assignment for school, and I want to know if what the story is based on was already taken.
What the story is about is:
An 8 year old girl steals money from her mom's wallet to buy her favorite skirt. She has nightmares that night and feels guilt inside, and decides to tell her mother. She finally confesses and her mother just gives her chores to do because of it. Helen isn't disappointed, she is full of relief from telling the truth.
I appreciate all that read this and answer this.

Go ahead and write it. Just keep it flowing with your own juices and your own feelings. That will keep it original. One question is how does she explain to the mother where the skirt came from? And most definitely if it is going to be a book for children, there has to be repercussions. The child has to pay some kind of a penalty. Chores isn't really enough. It really doesn't show she is paying a price for her transgression. You don't want to use your book to encourage kids to steal. There has to be some specific punishment. What would your mother do? I would take the skirt and return it to the store if I could. If not, I would give it to Good Will.

It does sound pretty real. I once read children's Bedtime Story in which a girl buys some jewellery despite her mother's saying no.But she doesnt steal. Your story is different.
Keep yourself shuttling between the mother and the girl and then you can feel exactly what they feel like. As a reader, i will recommend you to keep it very close to reality and dont make the emotions too difficult to apprehend, It is a children's book after all.
Best of Luck!!

Well I have never heard it before: were you referring to someone else's work for this idea? If not then I think it is safe to say that its yours and any similar stories are due to coincidence. Good luck.

I think you can safely write this story wihtout fear that you are using ideas already used. Good luck with your story.
