Pretty much any part of Texas sucks in the summer, but consider (a) Los Angeles weather is highly variable from location to location within the city. It can be 20 degrees cooler at the beach than on the east side of town. (b) Los Angeles weather in the winter is generally milder than it is in Fort Worth (except in the hilly areas of LA).

Los Angeles' weather is completely influenced by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The water on the coast of California is VERY cold, since it comes down from Alaska. This acts as a Air Conditioner to the hot air from the desert just 100 miles to the east (i.e. Palm Springs)
If Coastal California gets what they call "Santa Ana" winds (which are winds off the desert) the weather can be extremely hot, dry, and very dangerous for wildfires. North Central Texas has a humid continental climate and as such has much greater annual and even daily temperature changes than L.A.
L.A. Almost never drops below freezing, Fort Worth does every year. Fort Worth also get a lot more precipitation than Los Angeles, thus explaining the sticky feeling. When the air is humid, your body cannot cool itself as quickly because the heat cannot evaporate off your skin. Your sweat is competing with the humidity and has no place to go! In LA, sometimes it is so dry that when you walk out of the shower, you don't even need to use a towel!

Hope this helps.
