You start with a copy of Writers Market and read it cover to cover. It is essential that you learn to advocate for yourself and understand how publishing works. To reach a top ten publishing company, you will need an A List agent. How to reach them is all in the book. You also need to learn how to sort out legit agencies from ones that are not legit. For that, start with Preditors and Editors and Absolute Write Water Cooler's Bewares and Background Forum. Both are websites that offer authors information on scams in the industry.
Also if you go to my profile. you will see I have starred great Q and A regarding publishing and writing. Skim through the questions and find some you think are helpful. Many good authors who are published have come here and posted information. Print out ones that are helpful and start learning. You have a lot to learn before you end up in Barnes and Noble.

Go to Barnes and Noble or any other book store. Look in the book/story writing section and you will find a book that has publishers info. The book costs around 25.00 and well worth it.
