turn each mixed number into an improper fraction first.
8 1/2 x 1 7/9
17/2 x 16/9
Then multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators
272/18
136/9
Then turn it back into a mixed number
15 1/9

5 3/4 x 10 2/3
23/4 x 32/3
736/12
184/3
61 1/3

1. Change to improper fractions. 8 1/2 is 17/2 because 8 is the same as 16 halves and we have one more. 1 7/9 is 16/9 because 1 is the same as 9 ninths and we have 7 more.

2. We need 17/2 x 16/9 which is 17 x 16 / (2 x 9). To make things easy cancel the 2 first. 10/2 = 8 so we have 17x 8/9 which is 136/9 or 15 1/9

Second problem the same way. 23/4 x 32/3. Cancel the 4 because 32/4=8 so we have 23x8/3 = 184/3 = 61 1/3.

Hope this helps!

8 1/2 x 1 7/9= make your compound fractions into small ones
(8x2+1=17) and (9x1+7), so they become
17/2 x 16/9= cancel out 2 & 16
17/1 x 8/9=multiply across 17& 8=136/9
divide 136 by 9= 15 1/9 (9x15=135 + 1=136)

5 3/4 x 10 2/3= follow same steps as above
23/4 x 32/3= cancel out 4 & 32
23/1 x 8/3=multiply across, so 23 x 8 = 184/3
divide 184 by 3 = 61 1/3 or 61.3333333

first take the complex fraction and make it an improper fraction:
17/2 x 16/9. Then reduce and multiply across: (17 x 8)/9=136/9 = 15 1/9

23/4 x 32/3 = (23x8) /3 = 184/ 3 = 61 1/3

8 1/2 * 1 7/9
17/2* 16/9 (multiply whole number by denominator and add numerator)
272/18 (Multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator)
15 2/18 (divide 272 by 18 and you get 15 2/18
15 1/9 (reduce by dividing numerator and denominator by 2)

23/4 x 32/3
736/12
61 4/12
61 1/3
