Pure skill, it's between Lafontaine and Modano, but the former never won a cup, so my nod goes to Modano.
Modano put ego and stats aside and bought into a defensive system in pursuit of a Cup during the peak of his career. He may have sacrificed some offensive numbers as a result, but I have to believe he derves to be considered the most complete US born forward in league history.

Chris Chelios IMO. 3 Norris Trophies. A few cups. 1000 points as a DMan.....people forget that he used to be a decent offensive force as well as solid defensively. 3 Olympics. Tons of International. Tons of all star games. Captain of the Habs and Hawks once upon a time. People can go on about Lafontaine and Modano et al but Chelios has the best trophy case and the best case to be made as the #1 American born player all time. As LITY mentions, Lafontaine had two 100 point seasons, big whoop, when he was doing that so were 10 or 15 other players per season-the first time he scored 100+ he finished 8th in scoring.......MEANWHILE, Chris Chelios was THE BEST at his position for 3 years of his career. NEVER have any of the U.S forwards been THE BEST at their position for ANY season. To me, there is not much room for debate.

It's close between Chicago born Chris Chelios and Livonia born Modano (for those who don't know where that is, Livonia is about an hour away from Detroit).
I like Modano. He doesn't get enough credit for what he does. However, I have to go with Chelios. Back in the day, he was a terror on defense. Today, he's still very good at what he does.
Kudos also need to go out to LaFontaine and Leetch.

Well, statistically speaking it is Mike Modano as of 11/8/07. He scored 2 goals last night to give him the record for points scored by a U.S.-born player at 1,233 (and he owns the goal scoring record as well at 511).
Modano probably is the best all-around American player in the game. LaFontaine had more talent, but longevity has to be a factor in determining the best player. Conversely, Chelios is an iron man with massive longevity, but he doesn't have the scoring touch of a Modano.

With his stats, Modano is. He's the leading US goal scorer, and he set the new record for US points leader last night (and probably would have had a hat trick if he hadn't broken his stick in the third period). I think the only record for US players that he doesn't have is penalty minutes.

Chris Chelios he is 45 years old. still in the NHL 1st line defense. I'm pretty sure he is still making the all-star team. its definitely him. if he played forward when he was growing up he would beat modano's and housley's record

Patrick Lafontaine is far and away the best US born player ever. His stats tower above most other American players, and as Mikey stated, his points/game ratio is significantly higher than any other American
To the person who said Brett Hull. Brett was born in Canada...Vancouver, British Columbia to be exact.

He is definately the best ever. I wish though he had gotten the points to beat the record against someone other than my Sharks.
