We are newlyweds in our early 30s. I grew up 40mins north of detroit (Birmingham area) but haven't lived there in 10+ yrs...and my husband and I are going to be back in Birmingham for Christmas for 6 days (note - my husband is not from the area). Does anyone have any good suggestions of things to do (or events going on) in the area (downtown detroit, royal oak, birmingham, etc), daytime or nightime?? I want to keep busy and want my husband to have a nice time! Thanks so much for the help!!

ice skating in downtown at Campus Martius Park (800 Woodward Ave) the Detroit Zoo normally has holiday lights and so do some other parks.. B-ham still has carrige rides through downtown during the holidays. downtown Rochester covers all the storefronts in lights.. it's actually pretty sweet they are all in different colors.. enjoy your trip back and i hope your husband likes your home town!

Royal Oak has become the area to hang out in. They have several good bars and restaraunts. The Detroit Zoo always has a light festival which is nice if you get a mild day. There is always the Pistons, Red Wings, and evan the Lions. There are some good holiday shows down at the Fox depending on the day. If you like gambling, the new MGM casino is very nice.

I know theres ice skating and a tree lighting downtown near the fox theater. The Rockettes usually come into town around the holidays...and I think theres a winterblast festival that goes on downtown also. I say I think because I'm not sure if it was a one time thing or if its annually. But thats all downtown detroit..not sure about metro

Go Ice Skating Downtown and Enjoy the Christmas lights. I think Detroit's great at Christmas, lots of love.

PS. These other people are just trying to act big and bad, don't go to bad areas, and you'll be fine.

I dont know all the details but Hines park has the Christmas light show along a couple mile stretch of the road. I havent visited it in a couple years but I can tell you from experience that it is pretty cool and it will get you in the holiday spirit.

Contact the Meadowbrook Theater in Rochester. They do Christmas plays every year, and they're very good.
