Doesn't it bother you when co-workers mooch or beg for food?
I hate that!!!

I work at a hospital and sometimes a few of us cook. We all kick in a 5 or 6 bucks and I cook. I know how to cook things like tequila lime chicken with rice or lemon peppered shrimp with pasta in a white sauce. We make it known to everyone, 4 or 5 days ahead, that we plan to cook and say "whomever wants to eat, kick in your money now." Many times it is just a few of us and the others refuse to pay and say they will eat on their own. Then the day comes and they show up with a plate and get all mad and feelings hurt. They now see what was made and have a few bucks out "just for some / just a little."
If I am cook for 5, I make enough for maybe 6 not 11 or 13.
Then for days people are snotty with us and feelings are hurt.

Does this happen at you job?
Doesn't it tick you off???

Why do people mooch or beg food ???

We work in a small office where 3 of the 5 of us regularly bring in food. I bring fruit such as apples, oranges or grapes; boxes of crackers and some cheeses, popcorn or pretzels. Usually it is snack food and my 2 bosses will do the same. The other 2 girls are happy to eat it but when I finally told them it was their turn to bring something in they were offended.
What ticks me off the most is we have a place we put the food to share and sometimes I bring in a small snack for myself and keep it in my desk. Granola or fiber bars, maybe cottage cheese. I have left to visit clients and come back an hour later and my food is gone! The excuses range from "well I didn't like anything that was on the table and was hungry" to "oh, I didn't know you were having that for lunch"! I have politely said that they should ask before taking the things from my desk- I am not cold hearted and would share if they were hungry- but it gets ridiculous. One of the girls will stand and wait for you to eat soup if you've ordered out and ask every 15 seconds if you are going to eat your crackers. After she has finished her own meal! If you say you're saving them for later, she will pout and say she is hungry now. (She is at least 75lbs overweight so she is not a starving person)
The other girl will get offended and ask us "Where's all the fruit?" if it's the end of the week. I told her last week that she ate it all so quit complaining. She just laughed and walked away.

I have never minded bringing in food, will offer to shop if everyone wants to kick in a few bucks, but am tired of feeling taken advantage of. I'm a single mom with 4 kids to feed, and they at least say thank you when I make dinner or bring home special snacks for lunches!
You are not alone!

If they have money out on the day you make it then that is not mooching. However, it is bad planning on their part. On the other hand, if this has become such an event then make extra..it doesnt cost that much more for 8 servings as it does for 6. Then rake in the extra dough when they show up plate in hand.

like at a concert or other event ... charge more the day of the event... so 5 dollars in advance and 8 dollars the day of and just plan for extra people.. sounds like you can plan on them wanting some.

That is so irritating!! I would be furious... You're going to have to tell them they can't have any unless they contribute on time... OR, the next time they ask for it without ordering in advance, charge them double or triple for their LITTLE BIT. That'll fix em!!!

I also work in a hospital and we have regular potlucks so that all can participate. Even if someone doesn't bring food, they are welcome to partake in our feast. Sometimes I just bring enough snacky food for everyone because I enjoy it. I love to share food.
