Some young people read a lot and others don't like any other group of people.
I used to read several books a week but decided in 1984 to cut back now seldom read but still read one a day on vacation. I have a bag of books in my truck and one in the house and some half read books around but don't read so much.
Reading cut me off from people too much I would be buried in a book all the time.
My great nephew read 4 Harry Potter books in 2nd grade. His teacher said he was the best reader in the class, I don't know if he still reads but he had a bookcase in his room when he was born and could tell the books apart before he was 1. He loved stories as a baby but would shake his head no until his mom got the right book.

I am an avid reader - have been all my life. I come from a family of readers and authors. I enjoy just about everything but really like history, science (pertaining to the universe, etc.), biographies and really good fiction. I enjoy Isaac Asimov (how sad he's gone), Carl Sagan (also gone), Arthur C. Clarke. Love James Patterson, Jonathan Kellerman, John Lescroat, Nelson DeMille, Michael Connelly and so many others.

If you want to know the status of readers in our country, have a look at the following depressing statistics. No wonder so many of our citizens are semiliterate:

The following statistics about book publishing and reading were found on www.parapub.com, the Web site of self-publishing guru Dan Poynter. They'll give you an idea of what you're up against if you want to write books for a living.

1/3 of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.

42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college.

80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year.

70 percent of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years.

57 percent of new books are not read to completion.

70 percent of books published do not earn back their advance.

70 percent of the books published do not make a profit.

If you are referring to high school age thru - say 25 years of age - then No I do not think that they read as much as I do now. Am 66 and have been an avid reader all my life. The young people of today (as specified above) constantly have cell phones protruding from their ears, and /or mp3 players plugged in. I see this behavior at the Mall every time I visit. This does not leave much time for reading! Or homework, or studying of any kind! BUT to be fair - I know some of the "kids" today do read to better themselves!

I know several younger people that read, but most of the young people I work with do their reading online. I think all this modern technology has given the younger generation a different way to pass the time.

I started to answer this Q last night but we had a last minute emergency and had to run to Wal*Mart, lol! My son didn't thin he has enough shirts.. .. ..
Anyway, My kids grew up seeing me read a lot. I have three kids and two of them love reading and do more then teh other, who reads more then a lot ofother kkids I know so I know she reads more then a lot of kids.

I also know that they have friends who buy books, they talk about them, and trade books too.
So yes, I think they are reading. To them it is kind of a "new idea" sort of thing, LOL! Since they were born after satellite TV, internet and gaming!!
Plus with great stories like H. Potter and other timeless authors like Judy Blume, and the classics, they are really into it!
I would say YES, they are reading as much! At least the town whee we live anyway.
I know that a lof schools have summer reading programs fo rkids of all ages, so do companies like Pizza Hut, so they have more incentive to read then just somethign to do!!

I don't think so......seriously....I love the lady that wrote Harry Potter got alot of kids reading that never did before. I mean we had Nancy Drew and Black Velvet and the Hardy Boys and a host of things......I read everything I could get my hands on. Wasn't until Harry Potter my youngest even found a need to want to read.....now she scarfs books down.....there is something about a book that just isn't the same as a movie or cliff notes or a computer screen.........

My daughter just fell in love with the "The Prophet"....thought she found the meaning to life.....sad it was just me that told her about this classic. I don't care how high teck we get.....I just hope we never out-grow a good book. I bought my girls books and said....oh I wanted to read that......and they were well why didn't you? I wouldn't care. There's something sacred about a new book....the crisp snap when you break the binding...the smell....it's all part of the experience. The very first to open the door to this new experience.....sorry.....I love books.

I hope so because it is such a wonderful thing! But I fear that they don't as they grew up with Nintendo, X-box, Atari, and television shows much more sophisticated than we did. However, I notice that after my son got into the last year of college that he reads quite a bit now. My daughter has always loved to read. It is a family thing that even the aunts, uncles, cousins grandparents all do.

I'm only seventeen and I read quite a lot. None of my peers seem to read, and if they do, theyre reading magazines or short stories. I like to read Raymond Feist, Bryce Courtney, Jean Auel and Orson Scott Card... you get the idea! I love to read.

On the other hand, I find myself often preoccupied with new technologies such as the internet or the TV. I have to find the time to pick up a book. Its wrong to assume younger generations do not read, however, majority of them dont.

I think we are reading but getting it in a different way.. whereas older generation will read a book, most of the Generation X and Y rather read in bits and bytes.... I know I read more online than in books as of late.

I'm young and yes they do but the question is what? if email & im count they read more! but i would say the quality of what is read today is not as good, example pearl bucks womens pavilion vs. sophie knisella can you keep a secret? i think older books relied more on content than sex and gore to sell. so yes young people read as much but what?
