YES it takes place in the cytoplasm but to be more ACCURATE you should say it takes place in the cytosole(which is a part of the cytoplasm which contains no cell organelles)

the broken down product, pyruvates, are transfered into the mitochondria for aerobic respiration, but anaerobic activity all happens in the cytoplasm

Yes, then the rest of aerobic respiration happens in the mitochondrion.
