I'm an Irish woman and my other half is Dutch.

He cooks and cleans, which is a huge plus because I'm from the last generation of Irish men who are waited on by their mammies - I fecking well refuse to wait on a man hand and foot, unless he's ill and needs help. He hoovers! He does basic DIY, and when he's interested he just gets stuck in and gets things done.

At the risk of getting banned from Yahoo Answers, he's a Fine Thing in the scratcher, ahem ahem, that is coded so that people aren't too offended .... apologies if they are. I'm basically trying to get across that he's, erm, VERY adventurous. And playful.

He appreciates good coffee. As a result we don't do instant coffee anymore. Don't even have it in the house.

He likes food from other places. And cooks delicious Indonesian and Chinese meals.

He likes good books and movies and is appreciative of the arts, including performing. He loves to travel, and I think that this is a typical Dutch trait. His father was from near the city of Rotterdam.

There was an article about this in a Dutch newspaper a year or two ago, written by a woman who had actually researched this, by interviewing a large number of non-Dutch women who had had relationships with Dutch men and non-Dutch men, so they could compare.

She summarized her findings as follows: in the short term, Dutch men are terrible. In the long term, they are great.

Longer version:
A Dutch man won't hold the door for you, won't necessarily pay when you go out together, won't seem to care much about how you dressed up to go out, won't bring you flowers, etc. As compared to men of other nations, they aren't well versed in flattering language and compliments.
But for a long-term relationship, this is offset by many advantages: a Dutch man will do his share in the household, will gladly agree to take a part-time job when children are born and the woman wants to work too, will agree to move to another place if his wife can get a better job, etc.

Of course this is oversimplified and a ridiculous caricature -- there are Dutch men who can be very charming and flirty and terrible housemen, and non-Dutch persons who fit above description precisely -- but 'on average', that's how it is.

Dutch men are much the same as other men from any other place..but my experience of a Dutch man is something I will never forget and don't ever want to forget, I found he could be very serious, but he also had a great sense of humour, he was kind, thoughtful, he cooked, he cleaned, shopped, and of course he went everywhere on his bike..but the one thing that I found where he differed from some men was in the bed...what can I say only WOW!! as was said above ..he was very playful ;)

The younger ones can be very much full of themselves, with their gelled-back hair and their flashy clothing. A liking for showing off. That said, my impression is that you get quite a few serious and intelligent ones, though. Somehow, I see the Dutch as being a bit like the English in some ways.

They're okay if you catch a good one. One thing about dutch men, when they do get into a relationship they are really really serious and want to do everything together all the time. They do ALL brag about how much money they make and what a great car they have etc etc Very often the amount of money is very much exagerrated. But great sense of humor too. Just find a good one. I ran away from Holland and found myself a foreigner :) :)

I'm an American lady who married a Dutchman and after I read Orla's response I couldn't help but to notice the similarities. I've been to Holland several times and as a whole, the Dutch are friendly, open minded, kind and laid back. My husband loves to travel, is a hard worker and treats me like a queen...I love the Dutch!!
PS>>>We've been together for 10+ years and I've never seen him mad...

I am a Dutch male and had a good laugh at all the answers, thanks.

I recognize myself mostly in the man of Orla C. Give her the 10 points.

I’m an English man. I have travelled quite a lot in my time, spending years backpacking abroad. (France, Greece, Spain, Israel, Malaysia and Australia.)
Out of all of the countries that are non- English speaking (as a first language), I always found the Dutch people to be my favourite. They are fun, relaxed and straightforward going.
Hope that helps.
