Chinese Gift Exchange
There's probably nothing really Chinese about it. But I don't know. There's also nothing gender-specific about it, but since at the parties where we do this the women usually outnumber the men, I'll use the words "she" and "her".
It's what we do at one of our annual Christmas parties around here, and it's a lot of fun.

The rules go something like this:

Everybody brings one gift, wrapped. It should not be bought new for the occasion. It should not be fancy or expensive, but it should not be just plain junk either.
It's not a bad idea for a few people to bring an extra item in case somebody else hasn't gotten clued in,
Pile all the gifts in one place (and make sure they don't get mixed up with other gifts in the host's house).
Everyone who participates is expected to stay all the way to the end; splitting the scene with your gift can be seen as poor sportsmanship, and probably the best etiquette for earlier departers would be to put the gift back in the pile, even though it's open.
Check that the number of gifts at least equals the number of participants; it's a bummer if there's nothing for the last person. Prepare a set of numbered slips, folded and put in a bowl or hat; when you are ready to start everyone takes a number.
The person who drew number 1 takes a gift from the pile, opens the gift and sits down with the gift in plain sight, generally on her lap.
Then "2" then takes a gift, either from the pile or from 1. Then 2 sits down with the gift displayed. If 1's gift was taken, then 1 gets to take another from the pile. She cannot directly take back the gift that was just taken from her. She may be able to get it later, however.
Then "3" gets up and can take a gift, either from the pile, or from 1 or 2, in which case that person can take either a new gift, or one from another person, but not the gift that was just taken from her.
Etc. etc. and the very last person has the choice of all of the previous gifts, or the one (or more) still in the pile. Toward the end of the game it's not at all unusual for a lot of gifts to move around in a single turn before finally somebody takes a gift from the pile.
If there are still gifts left in the pile when all the numbers are accounted for, whatever people agree to do with them is fine.
Attempts to limit the number of times an item can change hands usually bring less than satisfactory results. The only rule here is that you can't directly take back something that was just taken from you, though the next time something else is taken from you, then you can get back the earlier item from whoever has it then, even the person who got it from you. No guarantee you'll keep it for long, however.
If someone brings a relatively expensive and very nice gift and the hostess gets it, which I've seen happen more than once, it's somewhat likely that nobody will mess with it, and that is probably karmically OK. Aside from that everything is fair game from start to finish, and expensive stuff brings out greed, ruins the game, etc., so make sure everybody knows not to bring any. There's a difference between wanting and coveting.
One more thing that I thought I had added to this page years ago but I see it's not there. Sometimes people try to make a rule like a gift can only change hands three times. This is a VERY BAD IDEA. I've seen it accentuate the coveting and dampen the game.

ok - here is an idea for ornament exchange - works also well with a white elephant gift - or $5 gift **************************************... say you have 20 people total at the party draw numbers 1-20 from a hat person #1 get to choose what ever present they want - open it ***now beginning with person # 2 - opens present - # 1 stands up - if person 2 likes their present they can keep it-and person 1 sits if person 2 likes 1's better - they trade - and #1 sits down 2's turn is over person 3 picks - 1 and 2 stand(holding presents in front) 3 likes theirs - 1 and 2 sit - - - -OR 3 wants # 1 - trades for #1 and 3 sits #1 now can trade BACK with #2 and 1 and 2 sit -= cause #2 cannot trade cause all are sitting down basically - if you don't like your present when you open it - you can trade-and you sit - and then if you're traded WITH - you can trade for someone still standing - then you sit down - and yours is not available(in that round) - and next person traded with until all are sitting - or someone says - I'll keep this and that round is over WHEN YOU GET TO #20 - and the trading is almost over hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe... after all presents are opened and round 20 is complete ALL STAND *****#1 gets to choose from the whole group - - - - - - and the last series of trades go down - until all are sitting or someone stops and says I like this one there will be screaming - hollering - and a party that won't be soon forgotten and you will be the hero! Merry Christmas!

hehehehehehe - gift game

say there are 20 people - all have brought a gift
(White elephant around the house or a $5 limit- OR WHATEVER LIMIT YOU GUYS WANT TO SET)

draw numbers 1-20 from a hat

person #1 get to choose what ever present they want - open it
***now beginning with
person # 2 - opens present - # 1 stands up
- if person 2 likes their present they can keep it-and person 1 sits
if person 2 likes 1's better - they trade - and #1 sits down
2's turn is over

person 3 picks - 1 and 2 stand(holding presents in front)
3 likes theirs - 1 and 2 sit - - - -OR
3 wants # 1 - trades for #1 and 3 sits
#1 now can trade BACK with #2 and 1 and 2 sit -= cause #2 cannot trade cause all are sitting down

basically - if you don't like your present when you open it -
you can trade-and you sit
- and then if you're traded WITH - you can trade for someone still standing - then you sit down - and yours is not available(in that round)
- and next person traded with until all are sitting - or someone says - I'll keep this and that round is over

WHEN YOU GET TO #20 - and the trading is almost over
hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehhee
after all presents are opened and round 20 is complete
ALL STAND
*****#1 gets to choose from the whole group - - - - - -
and the last series of trades go down - until all are sitting
or someone stops and says I like this one

there will be screaming - hollering - and a party that won't be
soon forgotten

and you will be the hero!

Merry Christmas!

We have often played "dirty Santa". Here's how it goes:
Everybody brings a wrapped gift or two or three, whatever. Don't put any names on them, pile them all in one place. Put numbers 1 - however many people there are, in a bowl. Everybody draws a number, that will be the order in which they take turns going to the gift pile. They choose a gift and unwrap it before the next person takes their turn. As each person takes their turn, they can choose to get one and unwrap it -or- take one that another person has already gotten, in which case, the person whose gift was stolen must then choose another gift to unwrap (to replace the stolen one). One other catch to this game is, the gifts are not to be bought from the store. Everybody has stuff that they never use, still in working order, just not being used, that's what you wrap and bring (nutcrackers, rice cookers, old books, old clock, etc). You may also bring gag gifts, such as dainty undergarments (wrap them in a big box, guys like to pick big presents) or a half roll of tp and a magazine.
Well, I hope I described it good enough, just keep taking turns and unwrapping until the gifts are gone.

Wow, it took me a while but it looks like we all play the same kind of game.

You could also play a guessing game.
First you think up several well known personalities and write each on a piece of paper. As people arrive, attach one of the papers on their backs. As people mingle, people they talk to can give them hints of what their paper personality is. There's no winner to this game, but it can be fun. ( the personalities do not have to be people)

Two

We bring a designated $ amount gift then shake dice
doubles you pick from the pile of gifts.Set a timer 10 mn
if you get multiple doubles you get to keep picking from the pile or from someone who has a gift. When the time is up the people with gifts get to keep one put the extras back in a pile
those who didn't get gifts shake again until all gifts are gone
Everyone then has one gift to open.

We,ve done the same above game but have used "used" gifts. The description was something you no longer need or want but is still useful..............this was alot of fun.....it was interesting to see what people brought.........The gifts were called White Elephant Gifts
