The ten year old boy may be responsible for starting the southern California fire by playing with matches; but he is not responsible for the devastation caused by the fire. The blame lies on the shoulders of the government officials; housing authorities, and home owners, who did not provide adequate planning for fire prevention and protection when constructing homes through out southern California. If criminal charges are brought against anyone, it should be the responsible parties. In my opinion, the child is being used to divert the blame from the real root cause of the devastation. The fire could have been started by a spark from muffler, lightning strike, etc.; it would have had the same devastating results.

This has been asked quite a few times tonight, but I'll answer, anyway. He's only ten. I think of my kid sister, and what would happen if she accidentally lit SoCal on fire, and I think I'd pity her. The guilt this boy is going to have to live with for the rest of his life should be punishment enough. He should have consequences, but not jail time or multi-million dollar fines! Maybe have him commit to community service (helping the fire victims), or help organize fund-raising campaigns to the same effect, or give him a hefty time-out, but anything more serious is just awful! He's only ten. Of course, I'm a SoCal resident whose home is still intact. I'm sure, if I had suffered any damage, my thoughts would be different.

Oh, the person who started the fire is definitely to blame. There isn't any way to plan for "fire prevention and protection" other than to try to get the firefighters to the area quickly. What would you have them do? It's very dry here, so fires start quickly. It's not the fault of the home owners or government officials. Everybody who lives here knows that it's stupid to play with matches around dry brush. The devastation caused by the fire is definitely the kid's fault.

i watch cnn news and there hasn't been any more reports on the fires.the last time i seen it-they said the 10 year old was responsible for one fire because they were tracing the fire trails to different places, and the 10 year old was one of the places the trace led back to.he wasn't in serious trouble-but they were going to decide what to be done about him.they kept on saying that all the fires were arson and they have proof with that theory.they were looking for a white truck because it was seen at one of the fires locations.there were 9 fires still burning the last time cnn said anything about the fires.there's no news now at all about the fires.i'd like to know as well as to what's going on.i'm thinking about emailing them just so i do know what's going on.

Add to that the Forest Servive/Park Service/BLM/state agencies being prevented from doing their respective jobs by environmentalist law suits. We need to manage our forests to prevent the huge buildup of flamables since nature has been prevented from doing this with logging, grazing, and controlled burns.
