total acres = 79.

Number of Acres Tim gets = x

Acres of Tom = 2x - 20.

Acres of Tom + Acres of Tim = total acres

x + 2x - 20 = 79

3x = 99

x = 33

So Tim gets 33 acres.

Total Acres = Tim Acres + Tom Acres

79 = 33 + Tom Acres

Tom Acres = 79 - 33 = 46.

So Tom gets 46 acres.

PROOF ---

2(Tim Acres) - 20 = Tom Acres

2(33) - 20 = 46 acres.

2T=79+20
T=99/2
T=49.5

Therefore we arrive at the conclusion based on the workout given above that Tom gets 49.5 Acres.
